The Inkheart: Leaping Off the Page

Inkheart is a book about books, a celebration of and a warning about books. The "Inkheart" of the title is a book. I don't think I've ever read anything that conveys so well the joys, terrors and pitfalls of reading. Each chapter is headed by a quotation from a classic - Peter Pan, The BFG, The Wind in the Willows, The Hobbit and many more - which, in the traditional way of such quotes, often has little to do with the subject of the chapter. The headings work more as a rich sample of the books that lie behind Inkheart .

Twelve-year-old Meggie discovers that when her father, Mo, reads aloud, the characters of the book actually come to life. Meggie's mother has mysteriously disappeared, and Meggie and her father have been moving from place to place to avoid vicious Capricorn and his attendant, Basta, who came from the book, "Inkheart." The two men have collected and destroyed all copies of the book so they can't be read back into their own fiction-world.

Capricorn wants his friend and cohort, Shadow, to be brought to life, and he knows that Mo can give him the treasures that remain in all the kingdoms of yore. However, Dustfinger, their fire-eating friend, wants to return to the world from which he was snatched. He betrays Meggie and Mo and bibliophile Great-aunt Elinor, trying to get the copy of "Inkheart."

When Capricorn steals the book and kidnaps Meggie, Mo and Dustfinger collaborate to rescue the girl — her father hoping for her safety and Dustfinger wanting to be read back into his world. I'm like a fish out of water," he says.

"Inkheart" has all the elements of a top-notch high fantasy: parallel themes of good and evil, glimpses of the "other-world" and truly convincing characters. The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." The man was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found out the box was empty. He yelled at her, stating, "Don't you know, when you give someone a present, there is supposed to be something inside? The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried, "Oh, Daddy, it's not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box. They're all for you, Daddy." The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.

Only a short time later, an accident took the life of the child. It is also told that her father kept that gold box by his bed for many years and, whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there. This is what the book "Inkheart" is about. I've read that there were 2 people who have the power to bring to life and make anything they read become a reality to them. I thought that was really interesting.

The book is about a 12-year-old girl named Meggie Folchart whose life changes dramatically when she realizes that her father, a bookbinder named Mortimer (Mo), has an unusual ability: when he reads aloud, he can bring characters from books into the real world. Meggie and Mo's adventure takes them throughout Europe, particularly Italy, and brings them into contact with many unusual characters. Mo has the special talent to bring characters out of books. One night he brings out three characters from Inkheart, a story set in medieval times and filled with magical beings. Now, 10 years later Meggie discovers the truth and it's up to her to escape evil grasp.

However it is currently available to US residents only. But with my curiosity itching, I used a zip code from the US to get in since they only ask a US zipcode for your registration. I think the address is being asked when you already have funds in your account ready for payment.

So there, I successfully signed up but got booted out early after playing their Hi-Lo game, which is a card game wherein you have to guess if the next card given to you is high or low. Pretty easy eh? Nope because you have an opponent, a real one by the way and you're betting your free 1 cent(given by Moolah) against that opponent. Hehe I lost so now i don't have any funds and the only way I can continue the game is when I have successfully invited new players, because that's when they will give me additional fund.

Hmmm...I didn't pursue the game because I don't wanna spend my blogging in exchange for playing. Well yeah it's a way of earning also but I still would choose doing my writing assignments in comparison to doing it. I guess it's just not for me, not my type of making money online. Ledger was found naked and unresponsive, facedown on the floor at the foot of his bed by a housekeeper trying to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse. Heath Ledger was unresponsive when a housekeeper found him in a Manhattan apartment Tuesday.

Yes, i was that lucky to have found the 5-in-1 edition of The Spiderwick Chronicles at the local bookstore. It's a treasure for me ' coz the hardbound cover is such a delight to my eyes. I've read somewhere that the movie adaptation is set for release this February 2008. I just hope they didn't mess up the plot just like what they did with The Golden Compass....aaarrggh.

The story is about three children who battle goblins and other magical creatures who are after Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide. The story follows the adventures of the Grace children: Simon, Mallory and Jared as they encounter many different types of faeries. The faeries themselves are left ambiguous as to be an integral and yet non-interjectional addition to the plot.

Finally, the tailor made up his mid what the matter was. So he heated his goose red hot and held it over the dwarf, and said, "Now, get out of here--I know you!"

But the dwarf never let on it noticed him; and the tailor lowered the goose little by little till it almost touched the dwarf's face. Then the dwarf spoke and said, "Well I'll leave, but first you go to the door and look round the corner." The man knew if he did that the dwarf would get the best of him and he said he would not. Then the dwarf saw 'twas no use, and it sprang out of the cradle and went roaring and cackling up the chimney, and a good child lay there in its place.

CSI Miami is a very popular show, and it is one of my favorite TV series. In Episode 63, it featured a topic on Identity theft, wherein Wolfe must find the truth when two women each claim that they are the real victim of identity theft and the other is the culprit.

The identity theft storyline is a timely and gripping one. The weak explanation for Eve's motive--that if Karla's husband would be dead, she would benefit from getting the certificate of death and ending the alimony payments--makes no sense, as Eve would not have been collecting Karla's paychecks. Had she been, she would have been charged with much more than identity theft.

Others have told me how dangerous climbing a mountain can be. But I just don't see it that way. I love how the sun bathes me in it's full glory, the splutter of rain when it overtakes us in our trek, the little things on the way that catches my attention every now and then, the pure will of heaving my body to make that next step, and make it to the final stop-the final destination.

Last March 30-April 2, 2007 we went to conquer Mt. Pulag. I never thought that such a mountain trek at Mt. Pulag would be as tough as it seemed. Mt. Pulag is considered the second highest mountain in the Philippines (9,645 feet above sea level. It is located in the island of Luzon, covering 11,500 hectares and lies along the Grand Cordillera Central Mountain Ranges.

Considered as one of the most beautiful National Parks in the Cordillera Area, the ranges cover portions of the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya. Mt. Pulag is naturally different from the rainforest peaks in the Philippines because of its open area where the summit of Mt. Pulag is covered with grass and dwarf bamboo plants. At lower altitudes, the mountainside has a mossy forest cloaked with fog, and covered with ferns, lichens and moss. The mountain is said to be comparable to the Chocolate Hills of Bohol during the dry season, while during the rainy monsoon season, it is camouflaged with all sorts of shades of green just like a typical golf-course. Locals of Benguet believed this to be a playing ground of their gods.

That's supposed to be the title of the Episode 1, Season 3 of the Avatar: The Last Airbender! I'm totally running out of patience waiting for this episode to be released by Nickelodeon. I've been waiting for months now. Oh, this can't be happening...please tell me when?!!! Please tell me.

Currently, the ONLY confirmed information regarding Season 3 are the episode titles for the first 5 episodes: "The Awakening," "The Headband," "The Painted Lady," "Sokka's Master," and "The Beach."

Neither Nickelodeon nor any sources on staff have revealed any information regarding air dates or episode summaries. All information listed on this site regarding Season 3, with the exception of the above-named episodes, should be regarded as purely speculative and most likely completely made-up.

For those who do not know me I love animes and cartoon, and everything adorable and cute. This one is an absolute favorite of mine, that's why I'm going nuts over the air date with all the vague speculations going around the Avatar community.

Ambidexterity

I'm a lefty, and it runs in the family. I write with my left hand and normally use it for personal and household tasks. It is a fact that writing is not as precise an indicator of handedness as it might seem, because many left-handed people write with their right hand but use their left hand for other tasks.

Approximately 8 to 15% of the adult population is left-handed. They say that left-handers' brains are structured differently in a way that widens their range of abilities, and the genes that determine left-handedness also govern development of the language centers of the brain.

Being ambidextrous is one of my goals.

The word "ambidextrous" is derived from the Latin roots ambi, meaning "both," and dexter, meaning "right" (as opposed to left) or favorable. Thus, "ambidextrous" is literally "right on both sides".

It can be learned. The key in learning is to start paying attention to minor tasks and performing them with one's opposite hand daily. While difficult at first, minor tasks like brushing teeth, opening doors, and eating will become steadily easier if a person keeps at it.

With this in mind, I want to share this information that I came across with years ago, and am still fascinated to it.

Well, it is said that Mohammed and Caesar could, upon occasions, perform two distinct mental operations--such as writing a letter and carrying on a conversation--simultaneously. Not having interviewed either of them I am unable to confirm this. Sa Bubungan ng Mundo (At the Roof of the World) is a book sent by a dear fellow blogger-friend: a Happy, Simple girl...thanks a lot Bey, and soon (on May1) I will meet her personally together with other 2 bloggers I have known through Reyna Elena's site.

The book talks about the Filipino’s dream to make that ultimate journey to climb and reach the summit of Mount Everest. It is written by ABS-CBN correspondent Abner Mercado and details his experience with the Philippine Team who took the dangerous climb to Everest in May 2006.

Lately, mountain-climbing has become my obsession. Before my school vacation ends, I intend to maximize the opportunities and climb as much mountain as I can...^_^

I'll document my experiences in climbing some (if not all, ambitious i know) in a separate blog, for I intend to make my new obsession a lifelong hobby.

Oneness of All Being

There is a bond, unseen but unmistakable, that links man to man, man to beast, man to plant, and man to mineral. The familiar phrase, "All is one, and one is all" speaks of this connection and union between all beings.

This bond is easily seen between mother and child, but it too is apparent between man and his mate, between twins, and among close friends and family members. There too, according to some New Agers, is a special link between so-called "Soul Mates" and "Twin Mates."

We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man--all belong to the same family. We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat.

For hundreds of years, the Indians lived in harmony with nature, treating fauna and flora as their dear brothers and sisters, and Mother Earth as their sustainer and protectress. They recognized and lived by the Universal Law of Oneness of all creation.

Hopefully, this oneness will also translate soon into action, for the advancement of the human race and for the harmonious co-existence of all beings.

True to these words, the destruction that has befallen the planet is now being borne by the starving and suffering sons of man. World hunger, poverty, pollution, and environmental destruction are some unpleasant realities of the present.

I know, I know. I am a Filipino but I am writing this in English. Didn’t you read? This is my home, I’ll do what pleases me. ^_^

One of my friends told me that introverted persons express themselves more fully in writing. I don’t know if this is true, I haven’t tried it yet but maybe this is a start. I normally keep things to myself. I live on my own, you see.

I want to write this as spontaneously as I think it to be. Like a diary. But no “Dear Diary” to top it off.

I don’t care if there would be grammatical errors or spellings that needed to be corrected. Why? I don’t want to please anybody. I’m done pleasing them. It’s just that I want to know myself better. After all these years of living, I don’t know if I can truly say to myself that I know the I that is ME. Why I am doing the things that I need to do. Why I have to continue on doing things that sometimes I question if that is the right one or that I just don’t have a choice.

Or why I am writing this is the first place. Haha yeah sometimes I amaze myself.

I do observe people a lot. Why? It’s my tendency. I like it. And I love watching them in an unobtrusive way. When a person looks straight into my eyes without flinching, I know that person strives to be honest in his/her dealings in life. The mannerisms they do, the actions they show which sometimes are very contradicting to what they really say, constantly fascinates me.

I also read between the lines. What do I mean? Well, for the fact that I love watching and reading detective stories, I sometimes get a hint of what they really are, what they hide from the world and projects themselves to be, the unique self that they truly are.

Sometimes I sit for hours at a park just watching people, the children happily playing all around, couples oblivious of their surrounding, random passersby, and almost just anything or anyone. Am I a boring person? Nah, I don’t think so...my friends could testify to that. But yes, I’d choose to be left on my own with a book or two, rather than go to a party. So what, sue me.

I made this blog to write just about anything. My observations. What tickles me. What makes me frown for little annoyances that comes across me. And about my friends.

Of course I have lots of them. And I wouldn’t trade any of them for the world. That’s how I value them. Sometimes I feel lucky for having each one of them. They’re not some public figures or celebrity icons to admire to, nor affluent persons of the uber upper class, but what the heck. They’re my friends, they’ve shown me what they are, with all the nuisances that comes with being friends (who would have the guts to call you at the wee hours of the morning just to say they just broke up with their partners, hah) but they are what they are, and I do am proud for being in their list of friends.

Lately, ahm let’s say 2months ago. I’ve made new friends over the spider’s web..hehe silly me. I mean I was just searching about Nursing results and Google gave me Reyna Elena among many other results. From then on, I got hooked up reading the posts there and having fun with the exchange of comments.

I got additional friends from there (and even created an umbrella email address to ease up the continuous exchange of individual emails) and they’re all wonderful in their respective rights. In alphabetical order (nyahaha), there’s Bea, ChuvaChienes, C5, Diwatangbyaning, KutangBato, ReynaElena, and Ross.

Maybe Santa decided I’m such a good person after all...because of them. I mean there’s nothing special about me. I’ve always thought of myself as just one of the population. Exist and co-exist. But the spider’s web has given me new flies to interact with.

Don’t you think that’s great? Well, I do and am now happily buzzing through.

Honestly, for these past few days I've been meaning to make a post here.

I don't know where to start. The right idea. The right words.

But nothing is truly right if i won't put my not-so-dainty fingers in my ever-so-patient keyboard.

I want to spill out a secret, that not even myself wants to admit, but I'm doing it now.

I want to be a writer.

Whoa! Yup, I know, I know…like in singing, i should just keep my "hidden talents" hidden…

"But, heck! What is this blog doing here?" you'd ask me…

Well, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and create a little house of my own, as inspired by my good friends that I've met online. They have their own unique stories to tell, so I thought of creating one and pour out whatever craziness I come across with.

I was never a writer. I more of want to read and observe, and I never learned how to fully express how I feel. But I realized it's a process of learning. If one is willing to learn, nothing is too difficult nor impossible.

So if I have wasted a minute of your time or two, I didn't mean to.

i just wanted to feel my fingers over my keyboard and watch what words can be interwoven into.
